MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two brothers are facing serious charges after police say they set up a man they had known for years, shooting him during what the victim believed was a routine visit to smoke together.
According to an affidavit, the victim told officers he had known the brothers for about four years. He said one of them, known to him as “Tavo,” called and asked to come over to smoke and chill. When the victim agreed, both brothers arrived at his Hickory Hill apartment.
Once inside, the victim said one brother stood behind him while the other engaged him in conversation. Moments later, he heard a loud gunshot and realized he had been hit. Police say the brothers then fled the apartment with several of his belongings.
The victim was able to call for help and was transported to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. His condition has not yet been released.
Investigators identified the suspects as brothers and took them into custody. They are now charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
Police say the attack appeared to be premeditated, noting the brothers used the phone call and the promise of a smoke session to gain access to the victim’s home. Detectives recovered evidence at the scene and reviewed statements to confirm the victim’s account.
Residents in the area say the incident is alarming because it began as what seemed like a normal social visit.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police are asking anyone with additional information to contact CrimeStoppers.
