NEW YORK (AP) — R&B singer Trey Songz was arrested in New York City earlier this month on assault and criminal mischief charges following a pair of alleged incidents at Manhattan nightlife venues, authorities said.
Songz, whose legal name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was taken into custody after an early-morning confrontation at a Times Square nightclub on Dec. 4. Prosecutors allege the singer struck a club employee after being told the venue was closing, causing swelling and pain to the worker’s face.
Hours later, Songz was also charged in connection with a separate disturbance at a Manhattan restaurant and hookah lounge, where prosecutors say he damaged property including furniture and equipment, resulting in an estimated $1,500 in losses.
The 41-year-old artist appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court and was released under supervision. A judge issued an order of protection for the alleged assault victim and scheduled a return court date for February.
Songz did not address reporters as he left the courthouse. His attorney said in a statement that the singer is cooperating with authorities and expects the matter to be resolved once all facts are reviewed.
The arrest adds to a history of legal issues for the Grammy-nominated singer, who has faced multiple allegations over the years, some of which were dismissed or settled without conviction.
Songz rose to prominence in the mid-2000s with chart-topping hits including “Slow Motion” and “Say Aah,” and has remained a visible figure in R&B and pop culture for more than a decade.
