Michigan Man Fatally Stabbed After Argument Over How to Cook Chicken at Labor Day Barbecue
A Labor Day barbecue in Michigan turned deadly after an argument over how chicken should be cooked allegedly escalated into a fatal stabbing.
Kenneth Erwin Thomas, 60, was hosting a barbecue with his live-in girlfriend at their home in Hazel Park when her brother, 62-year-old Cleo Lawson of Detroit, attended the gathering, according to Hazel Park police.
Police said Thomas and Lawson became involved in an argument over how the chicken for the barbecue should be cooked. What began as a disagreement over food allegedly escalated into a confrontation between the two men.
During the altercation, authorities allege Lawson stabbed Thomas. Police and emergency personnel responded to the home and attempted to provide medical assistance, but Thomas died from his injuries.
Lawson was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Thomas’ death. He was arraigned Sept. 10 and denied bond. He remained in the Oakland County Jail pending further court proceedings.
Authorities have not publicly detailed exactly what was said during the argument or what specific disagreement about cooking the chicken caused the confrontation to escalate.
The case drew attention because of the seemingly ordinary circumstances that preceded the violence — a holiday barbecue and a disagreement about preparing food — that police say ultimately ended with one man dead and another facing a murder charge.
Lawson is accused of the crime, and the charge against him remains an allegation unless and until proven in court.
