DOJ Says Pooh Shiesty, Big30 and Others Kidnapped and Robbed Gucci Mane in Dallas Recording Studio Ambush

Date:

What spent weeks circulating online as rumor has now moved into federal court territory.

Federal prosecutors in North Texas said Thursday, April 2, that Memphis rapper Pooh Shiesty, whose legal name is Lontrell Williams Jr., was among nine men charged in connection with what authorities described as a violent January 10 armed robbery and kidnapping inside a Dallas music studio. Prosecutors also say fellow Memphis rapper Big30, whose legal name is Rodney Wright Jr., was part of the group accused in the case. Local reports identified Gucci Mane as one of the victims, even though federal officials at the Dallas news conference stopped short of naming the alleged victims publicly.

The case is explosive not just because of the names attached to it, but because it appears to line up with a story that had been floating around social media for months with little hard proof. Back in January, online claims that Gucci Mane had been robbed, kidnapped, and pressured into signing release paperwork tied to Pooh Shiesty’s recording deal were widely treated as unverified internet gossip. Multiple outlets at the time noted there was no police filing, court record, or official statement confirming the allegation. Now, prosecutors say that a version of that story did in fact form the core of a federal criminal complaint.

According to the Department of Justice account relayed by local reporters, the alleged setup began when music professionals traveled from Memphis to Dallas for what they believed was a legitimate business meeting about a contract. Prosecutors say the meeting was actually a trap. Once the victims were inside the studio, Williams Jr. and his co-defendants allegedly launched what FOX 4 described as a “coordinated armed takeover.” Authorities say Pooh Shiesty produced an AK-style pistol, held one victim at gunpoint, and forced that person to sign a release from his recording contract. Other members of the group allegedly displayed firearms, stole cash, jewelry, and a Rolex, and kept the victims from escaping.

Federal authorities say the violence did not stop at threats. Prosecutors allege one victim was choked to the point of near-unconsciousness during the attack. Big30 is accused of physically barricading the studio door with his body so the victims could not leave. Investigators also allege that Shiesty’s father, Lontrell Williams Sr., helped plan and carry out the incident, including by assisting with logistics tied to the group’s travel.

Investigators say they were able to connect the defendants to the alleged crime through multiple forms of evidence, including electronic monitoring data, license plate reader information, and social media posts. That part matters because prosecutors say Pooh Shiesty was still on federal home confinement at the time of the alleged January robbery, serving the remainder of his previous sentence from an earlier federal firearms case. Authorities say some of the suspects later posted photos and videos online showing off items believed to have been stolen in the robbery.

That detail makes the case even more damaging for Pooh Shiesty’s image. He had only been released from federal prison about six months ago after serving time connected to firearm and drug charges. His release had been treated by many fans as the start of a comeback. Instead, federal prosecutors are now portraying him as the central figure in a new violent conspiracy that unfolded while he was still under supervision. FOX 4 reported that each defendant charged with kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping could face up to life in federal prison if convicted.

At Thursday’s press conference, U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould framed the case as a warning to anyone who thinks intimidation and violence can be used to settle business disputes. He said the victims came to Dallas for legitimate business and were met instead with guns and violence. Dallas-area reporting also said eight of the nine men had already been arrested in a coordinated operation spanning Memphis, Nashville, Frisco, and Dallas, while one suspect remained outstanding as of Thursday afternoon.

What makes the story hit even harder is the irony at its center. Gucci Mane helped launch Pooh Shiesty’s mainstream run when he signed him to 1017 Records in 2020. That partnership was once sold as a classic rap cosign: an established Southern star putting a younger Memphis artist in position. Now prosecutors are alleging that a meeting tied to Shiesty’s contract became the setting for an armed kidnapping and forced signature. That is not industry drama. If the allegations hold up in court, it is a brutal collapse of a mentor-protégé business relationship into a federal violent-crime case.

Still, one point needs to stay clear: these are allegations, not convictions. The criminal complaint and the government’s public statements tell only one side of the story at this stage. Defense attorneys will have the chance to challenge the government’s evidence, the witness accounts, the identification of individual roles, and the broader theory that the meeting was planned as an ambush from the start. But after months of people arguing online over whether the Gucci Mane-Pooh Shiesty story was fake, exaggerated, or impossible, federal prosecutors have now attached their names, badges, and case files to it.

The rumor phase is over. The legal phase has begun.
