Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X is one step closer to having serious felony charges dismissed after a Los Angeles judge approved his entry into a mental health diversion program tied to a 2025 arrest involving police.
According to court proceedings reported by Rolling Stone, the rapper—whose real name is Montero Hill—will avoid prosecution on multiple felony counts if he successfully completes a two-year, court-supervised mental health treatment plan. The charges stem from an August 2025 incident in Los Angeles, where Hill was arrested after allegedly confronting and striking police officers responding to reports of erratic behavior.
At the time of the arrest, authorities said Hill was seen walking through a neighborhood in minimal clothing and later behaving aggressively toward officers attempting to detain him. He was subsequently hospitalized, with reports indicating a possible overdose and what was later understood to be a mental health crisis.
The court determined that Hill’s actions were “aberrant” and linked to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. As a result, instead of moving forward with a traditional criminal trial, the judge opted for a diversion approach—one that prioritizes treatment over punishment.
Under the terms of the program, Lil Nas X must continue therapy, comply with psychiatric care, avoid any further legal trouble, and refrain from violent behavior or weapon possession for the full two-year period. If he meets those conditions, the felony charges—including multiple counts of battery on a police officer and resisting arrest—will be dismissed entirely.
The stakes are significant: without the diversion program, Hill could have faced up to five years in prison if convicted.
Following the hearing, the artist expressed gratitude for the outcome, acknowledging how serious the situation could have been. The judge also noted that Hill appears to be making progress in treatment and is “doing very well,” reinforcing the court’s decision to focus on rehabilitation.
