Woman Arrested After Investigators Allege Massive $37K SNAP Fraud Scheme

Date:

A New York woman is facing welfare fraud charges after investigators say she improperly collected nearly $37,000 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits by allegedly failing to disclose household income and residents living in her home.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old Elise M. Roberts was arrested following an investigation into alleged benefit fraud. Authorities claim Roberts did not accurately report all members of her household or all sources of income tied to the residence while receiving public assistance.

Investigators allege the omissions resulted in Roberts receiving $36,667 in SNAP benefits she was not legally entitled to collect. The sheriff’s office said the case led to charges connected to welfare fraud.

SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, is a federally funded assistance program intended to help low-income individuals and families purchase groceries. Eligibility and payment amounts are based on income, household size, and other financial disclosures submitted by applicants.

Cases involving alleged SNAP fraud have become a growing focus for agencies nationwide as states increase oversight and verification procedures tied to public assistance programs. Penalties in welfare fraud cases can include repayment demands, fines, probation, or prison time depending on the amount involved and state law.

Authorities have not released additional details about the investigation or whether more charges could follow.
