Fight Over Leftover Catfish Ends in Shooting, Indianapolis Police Say

Date:

An Indianapolis man was taken into custody after a disagreement with his roommate over leftover food escalated into a violent confrontation, according to police.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says the incident started on the city’s east side when 30-year-old Davante Payne demanded $10 from his roommate for a plate of catfish and fries. When the roommate offered that the meal was worth only about $3 and tried to contact others for the money, the situation turned physical.

Officers allege Payne attacked the roommate, kicking him in the head, striking him with a small baseball bat, and ultimately shooting him during the altercation. In the chaos, Payne reportedly took two of his roommate’s phones and a set of keys, telling police he planned to sell them to collect the money he believed he was owed.

Police located Payne the next day wearing a GPS monitoring device from a previous case. They spotted him riding a bicycle with a firearm visibly tucked in his coat. When officers tried to place him under arrest, he resisted and was subdued with a taser before being taken into custody.

Payne was booked into the Marion County Jail and now faces multiple preliminary charges, including armed robbery, kidnapping, criminal recklessness and unlawful possession of a firearm.
