MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A newly appointed Shelby County commissioner is making headlines not only for making history but also for unexpectedly becoming a viral heartthrob online.
The Matthew Szalaj was appointed Monday by the Shelby County Commission to fill the District 9 seat left vacant after former commissioner Edmund Ford Jr. resigned earlier this year following a guilty plea in a federal tax evasion case.
At just 24 years old, Szalaj instantly made history as the youngest person ever to serve as a Shelby County commissioner, a milestone that quickly drew attention across local and national social media.
But as news of the appointment spread, many people online seemed just as captivated by his youthful looks and polished appearance as they were by his résumé.
Social Media Reacts: “Why Is the New Commissioner So Fine?”
Within hours of the announcement, screenshots of Szalaj’s headshot and clips from the commission meeting began circulating on platforms like X, Facebook, and TikTok. Comment sections quickly filled with jokes, thirst tweets, and memes from viewers surprised to see someone so young — and, according to many commenters, so good-looking — stepping into local politics.
Some posts joked that the commission meeting “suddenly became must-watch TV,” while others simply asked variations of the same question: “Who is the new commissioner and why is he so fine?”
While viral attention over politicians’ appearances isn’t new, it’s unusual for a local government appointment to spark this level of online chatter, especially in a race that otherwise received relatively routine political coverage.
A Rising Political Figure
Behind the internet buzz is a young political professional already working inside city government. Szalaj currently serves as a special assistant for policy to Memphis Mayor Paul Young, giving him experience in municipal policy and budgeting.
He was chosen from a pool of ten candidates after three rounds of voting, ultimately winning the seat in an 8-4 decision over fellow finalist Rasheeda Jones.
District 9 includes parts of Southwest Memphis, Westwood, and Whitehaven, communities that will now be represented by the young appointee until voters choose a permanent commissioner later this year.
Despite the temporary nature of the appointment, Szalaj will still help shape county policy — including participating in discussions surrounding the Fiscal Year 2027 budget.
Politics Meets Internet Culture
The sudden wave of online fascination highlights a growing reality of modern politics: public figures are now instantly subject to the internet’s viral machine, where a single photo can turn a routine civic appointment into a trending topic.
For Szalaj, the attention may be lighthearted, but it also comes with expectations.
Now the youngest commissioner in Shelby County history, he will quickly move from viral moment to the serious work of governance — deciding budgets, weighing community investments, and representing thousands of residents in District 9.
Still, if early internet reactions are any indication, Memphis may have just gained its most unexpectedly viral local politician yet.
