For years, Jesse Kortuem lived two parallel lives. On the ice, he was a dedicated hockey player shaped by Minnesota’s deeply ingrained hockey culture. Off the ice, he quietly carried a truth he wasn’t ready to share publicly: he is gay.
That changed after Kortuem found unexpected inspiration through Heated Rivalry, a popular hockey romance that centers on the intense competition—and emotional connection—between two male players. What began as entertainment slowly became a mirror, reflecting possibilities Kortuem had never allowed himself to fully imagine.
Growing up in a sport that often prizes traditional masculinity, Kortuem internalized the belief that being openly gay and being taken seriously as a hockey player couldn’t coexist. Although he was out to close friends and family, he remained closeted in hockey spaces, worried about locker-room dynamics, labels, and whether his identity would overshadow his skill.
