BELLE GLADE, Fla. — The July 5 fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jayla McGee is drawing national attention after family members and LGBTQ+ advocates raised concerns that her death received little public notice despite the ongoing homicide investigation.
McGee, a Black transgender woman from Belle Glade, was shot and killed in the Palm Beach County community. While friends and relatives publicly mourned her death and held funeral services, advocates say few details about the case have been released by law enforcement, and the killing received minimal media coverage in the weeks that followed.
According to The Advocate, McGee was known among friends for her outgoing personality and involvement in Florida’s LGBTQ+ and ballroom communities. Loved ones described her as someone who enjoyed dancing, fashion and spending time with family and friends. They said she had recently begun gender-affirming hormone therapy and was looking forward to continuing her transition before her life was cut short.
Advocates say the lack of information surrounding McGee’s death has been compounded by inaccurate reporting and official records that allegedly identified her by her birth name or misgendered her. They argue those errors made it more difficult for the public to learn about the case and contributed to the limited attention it received.
“This is about making sure victims are accurately identified and remembered,” advocates told The Advocate, noting that respectful reporting is essential for both families and investigators.
McGee’s family has also endured previous tragedy. In 2022, her younger sister, 8-year-old Ronziyah McGee, was killed in a separate shooting on the same block where Jayla was later fatally shot. That case received widespread local media coverage, making the relative silence surrounding Jayla’s death even more painful for relatives, advocates said.
As of Friday, authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or announced an arrest in connection with McGee’s killing. Law enforcement also has released few details about what led to the shooting, and the investigation remains active.
McGee’s death has become part of a broader national conversation about violence affecting transgender Americans, particularly Black transgender women, who advocacy organizations say experience disproportionately high rates of violence. Supporters have called for greater transparency in the investigation, more accurate reporting by media outlets and officials, and justice for McGee and her family.
Friends continue to share tributes on social media celebrating McGee’s life, saying they hope she will be remembered for the joy she brought to those around her rather than solely for the circumstances of her death. Meanwhile, family members and advocates say they will continue pushing for answers as the homicide investigation moves forward.
