Atlanta Black Pride Nicki Minaj Night Sparks Backlash as Organizers Defend Event

Date:

Nicki Minaj-themed party held during Atlanta Black Pride weekend has ignited a fierce debate across social media, with critics questioning why one of the nation’s largest Black LGBTQ+ celebrations would spotlight an artist who has recently become associated with conservative politics and comments viewed by some as hostile to transgender people.

The controversy erupted after Atlanta Black Pride-affiliated accounts promoted the event and defended the decision in a lengthy statement. Organizers argued that Black Pride events are intended to be welcoming spaces for all Black gay people regardless of political beliefs, stating that attendees should not be judged based on who they voted for and emphasizing that the event was about music, dancing, and community rather than politics.

Atlanta DJ Angel X, who was involved in promoting the event, also publicly defended the celebration. In a statement posted to social media, Angel X said that enjoying Nicki Minaj’s music does not mean agreeing with everything she says and noted that themed nights dedicated to artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Cardi B, and Lil’ Kim are also part of a larger series celebrating influential performers. Angel X made it clear that the Nicki Minaj night would move forward despite criticism.

For many critics, however, the issue extends beyond music. Over the past year, Minaj has drawn backlash from portions of the LGBTQ+ community for increasingly aligning herself with conservative political figures and causes. In late 2025, she appeared at a Turning Point USA event alongside Erika Kirk, praised President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, and later described herself as one of Trump’s biggest supporters. She also faced criticism after sharing pro-Trump content online and making remarks about transgender youth that many LGBTQ+ advocates viewed as anti-trans.

Those developments have led some former fans to argue that Minaj’s recent political evolution is at odds with the values many associate with Pride events. Supporters of the Atlanta party, meanwhile, contend that a person’s music can be appreciated separately from their political opinions and that excluding artists based on politics would create a different kind of division within the community.

Adding another layer to the controversy, critics noted that comments were disabled on Instagram posts addressing the issue, limiting public discussion directly on the announcements. The decision prompted accusations that organizers were avoiding criticism, while supporters argued that turning comments off was likely intended to prevent harassment and online hostility.

As the debate continues, the dispute has become one of the most talked-about moments of this year’s Atlanta Black Pride celebrations, highlighting growing tensions over politics, celebrity culture, and where Black LGBTQ+ spaces should draw the line between an artist’s work and their public views.
