Body of Missing Mississippi Teen Nolan Wells Recovered After Massive Search Effort

Date:

The search for 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells has ended in heartbreak after authorities recovered a body believed to be the Ocean Springs teen Monday morning near Horn Island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Officials say a park ranger located the body around 8:45 a.m. in the water near the island’s northwest end. While formal identification is pending through DNA testing, the Jackson County Coroner said there is no reason to believe the body is anyone other than Wells, and his family has publicly confirmed the devastating loss.

Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July outing with friends on Horn Island, where he was last seen around 3 p.m. on July 4. Friends, family, and investigators spent the weekend desperately searching for answers as multiple agencies launched an extensive air, land, and water search across the island and surrounding Gulf waters.

The operation brought together the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, and volunteers with the United Cajun Navy, whose members searched tirelessly in hopes of bringing Nolan home safely.

A graduate of Ocean Springs High School and a rising sophomore wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, Wells was remembered by teammates and friends as a respectful, kind-hearted young man with a bright future both on and off the football field. His disappearance prompted an outpouring of support across Mississippi, with thousands sharing his photo and praying for his safe return.

In the days leading up to the discovery, Nolan’s mother made emotional pleas on social media asking anyone who had been on Horn Island that day to check their photos and videos for anything that might help investigators piece together his final known movements. Those requests were widely shared as hope remained that he would be found alive.

Authorities have not yet released the cause or manner of death, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials are continuing to ask anyone who was on or near Horn Island on July 4 and has information about Nolan’s movements to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
