Lil Nas X is mourning the death of his mother, Tameka Hill, sharing an emotional tribute that offered a rare public glimpse into a relationship he had previously described as complicated but still rooted in love.
The 27-year-old Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Montero Hill, announced his mother’s death Saturday, Aug. 29, in an Instagram post featuring photographs of Hill from different periods of their lives.
“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY,” Lil Nas X wrote. “this one’s gonna hurt.”
The photos included an image of Hill by herself, a photograph of mother and son together at an event and a childhood picture of Lil Nas X with his mother. As of Sunday, neither Hill’s age nor her cause of death had been publicly disclosed.
A Complicated Mother-Son Relationship
Although Lil Nas X rarely discussed his mother publicly, he had been candid about the difficulties that shaped their relationship.
In a 2020 interview with Variety, the rapper revealed that his mother struggled with addiction and acknowledged that the two were not particularly close. He said he had attempted to help her but those efforts had not worked out as he hoped.
Despite those struggles, however, he made one point clear: “there’s still love.”
His father, Robert Stafford, also spoke publicly about Hill’s struggles in 2025, describing the emotional burden his son carried because he could not change his mother’s situation despite his success and financial resources. Stafford said Hill had been “a good mother” before addiction became a major part of her life.
Lil Nas X also explored the complicated relationship through his music. On his 2021 debut album, Montero, the song “Dead Right Now” addressed his mother’s addiction and the emotional conflict surrounding their relationship.
Loss Comes During a Difficult Chapter
Hill’s death comes during an intensely personal period for Lil Nas X.
The superstar returned to social media earlier this summer after spending months largely outside the public eye. In June, he revealed that he had spent time in rehabilitation and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He said he was working with both a therapist and psychiatrist and described himself as doing and feeling better.
Those revelations followed his highly publicized August 2025 arrest in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, Lil Nas X entered a mental health diversion program connected to the case.
Just days before announcing his mother’s death, the rapper had been celebrating a very different milestone.
On Aug. 24, he shared a cake marking what he described as his 10,000th day alive. The moment came as he continued speaking publicly about recovery, survival and rebuilding his life following a turbulent year.
Now, that period of recovery has been met with another deeply personal challenge.
For an artist who has built much of his public identity around humor, provocation and an ability to turn difficult experiences into art, his announcement about his mother was notably brief.
There was no lengthy explanation of their history and no attempt to define a relationship that had clearly contained both pain and affection.
Instead, Lil Nas X summed up the loss in a few words: he loved his mother, and losing her hurts.
