Man Arrested For Beating 72 Year Old Boyfriend After Breakup

Date:

Fort Lauderdale’s mayor, Dean Trantalis, is facing an unexpected and deeply personal crisis after authorities say he was attacked outside his home by his former fiancé, just months after the pair publicly celebrated their engagement.

According to officials, the incident occurred outside Trantalis’ residence when his ex-partner, a 34-year-old man with whom he was previously engaged, allegedly confronted him and initiated a physical altercation. Trantalis, 72, reportedly suffered injuries during the confrontation before police arrived and took the suspect into custody.

The two had announced their engagement earlier this year, drawing public attention both due to the mayor’s high-profile role and the significant age gap between the couple. However, their relationship reportedly deteriorated in the months that followed, leading to a breakup and court filings related to safety concerns.

Sources say the mayor had previously sought legal protection, citing escalating behavior from his former fiancé in the weeks leading up to the alleged attack. The suspect was reportedly under a no-contact order at the time of the incident.

Trantalis, who has served as Fort Lauderdale’s mayor since 2018 and is the city’s first openly gay mayor, has not issued a full public statement on the matter but is said to be cooperating with authorities. Officials confirmed the former fiancé now faces charges connected to the alleged assault and violation of a protective order.

The situation has sparked conversation in the community, particularly around domestic-violence protections and safety for public officials. Residents and city leaders have expressed concern and support, noting the emotional and public nature of the case.

As the investigation continues, Trantalis is expected to resume his duties while working with law enforcement to ensure his safety. Court proceedings related to the incident are pending.
