SAN ANTONIO, Texas (AP-style) — A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the brutal killing of his 81-year-old partner, a case that has drawn attention for its violence and the decades-wide age gap between the two men.
According to the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, Alberto Ferrer Cabrera, 26, was sentenced on March 20, 2026, for the murder of Donald Atha Weynandt, 81, his common-law husband.
Authorities said Weynandt was killed on Feb. 1, 2025, after Cabrera cut his throat with a knife inside their residence. Prosecutors described the killing as particularly violent, noting that Cabrera later admitted to the crime multiple times.
Investigators said Cabrera confessed to a 911 dispatcher, his landlord, and later to detectives. Despite those admissions, officials said a clear motive was never firmly established.
During the investigation, Cabrera reportedly told authorities he had been under stress related to trying to bring his young son from Colombia to the United States. Prosecutors did not indicate that this justification mitigated the severity of the crime.
The case was handled by the district attorney’s Family Violence Division, reflecting the domestic nature of the relationship between the two men.
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a statement that Weynandt “deserved to live out his life in safety and dignity,” emphasizing the vulnerability of elderly victims in domestic situations.
Cabrera will serve his sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
